The 2008 Mercedes-Benz SL 350 R230 is one of those cars that feels special before you have even driven it. Long bonnet, two-seat layout, rear-wheel drive and one of Mercedes-Benz’s most recognisable SL designs.
Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 producing 315 bhp and 360 Nm, paired with the 7-speed 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox.
It will accelerate from 0–62 mph in 6.2 seconds and reach an electronically limited 155 mph.
And then there is the roof.
Unlike a traditional fabric soft-top, the R230 uses Mercedes-Benz’s clever Vario-Roof — a fully retractable metal hard-top. At the press of a button, the roof folds away into the rear of the car in approximately 16 seconds, transforming the SL from an enclosed coupé into a genuine open-top roadster.
